Expanding Beyond Tournaments.

After seven months in market, Skrmiish had converted only 16 free users into paying players. The team needed to identify a new revenue opportunity that could demonstrate commercial viability while maintaining player engagement.

I helped conduct community surveys and competitor analysis to understand what would motivate players to spend within the platform.

Research highlighted growing demand for skill-based solo challenges. Competitors offering flexible, individual competition formats were seeing strong commercial results, suggesting an opportunity beyond traditional tournaments.

Defining the Solution

We introduced Skill Challenges, a new game mode where players could complete individual objectives and compete for rewards.

Working with Sportsflare’s API, we created a system that could track player performance and dynamically adjust challenge difficulty and reward potential based on skill level.

Designing the Experience

The addition of Skill Challenges required a rethink of the product structure. I redesigned the information architecture to support multiple ways to play and improve feature discoverability.

The existing flyout navigation was transformed into an educational hub, helping players understand different game modes and how rewards worked.

Using the existing Skrmiish design system, I integrated the new experience through:

  • A dedicated game mode selection flow

  • Skill Challenge browsing and entry screens

  • A streamlined onboarding experience

The project enabled Skrmiish to introduce an additional monetisation pathway while expanding participation opportunities beyond organised tournaments.
